The government is preparing to implement mandatory flu vaccination for healthcare workers, following a favorable opinion from the French National Authority for Health (HAS). Minister Stéphanie Rist announced the immediate commencement of work on the plan, with a phased rollout and no penalties for non-compliance during the first year.
The details (timeline, professions concerned, proof of vaccination) will be defined in the coming weeks, in consultation with stakeholders in the sector. The HAS recommends making annual vaccination mandatory for healthcare professionals, medical and paramedical students, and staff in facilities caring for the elderly.
The health authority justifies this measure by the burden of influenza, which caused 12,700 deaths in 2025/26, and by the increased risk of transmission in healthcare settings. The annual cost of the disease is estimated at between 1 and 2 billion euros.
