The European Commission has issued a formal notice to France for failing to fully transpose the Drinking Water Directive. Ireland and Slovenia are also affected.
The French shortcomings concern risk assessment in private facilities, water quality monitoring, and public communication. Paris has two months to respond, otherwise the Commission may refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the EU.
This reminder comes on top of existing tensions: in 2020 and 2023, France was already criticized for excessive nitrate levels. Due to insufficient action, the case was brought before the Court in 2024.
The Ministry for Ecological Transition is seeking to reassure the public, citing an ambitious roadmap to improve the quality of water sources. The directive aims to protect health by addressing new pollutants, including endocrine disruptors and microplastics, while ensuring better access to drinking water.
