The National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) has issued a new warning concerning the risks of excess vitamin D in infants, after discovering three new cases of overdose . The agency stressed that excess vitamin D can have serious consequences on the health of infants and can even threaten their vital prognosis.
In France, vitamin D is prescribed from the first days of infants' lives to prevent rickets, a disease of growth and ossification. However, ANSES has warned that overadministration of vitamin D can be as dangerous as vitamin D insufficiency. The agency recorded three new cases of severe hypercalcemia in infants in 2022, resulting from improper use of vitamin D. food supplements containing vitamin D.
To reduce the risks, ANSES recommends preferring medications to taking food supplements, because they guarantee clear information on doses, precautions for use and the risks of adverse effects and overdose. The agency also advises carefully controlling the doses given to infants and not multiplying products containing vitamin D to avoid overdoses that could disrupt their kidney function. Finally, ANSES reminds that vitamin D intake must be prescribed by a health professional.
