Depression is currently the second leading cause of disability worldwide. According to the WHO, projections suggest it could become the leading cause by 2030.
High Level of Comorbidity As one of the most common psychiatric disorders, depression has a high level of comorbidity. It can cause significant impairment in social, family, and professional functioning, and a substantial decline in the quality of life of those affected.
Standard Treatment Strategies Therapeutic advances made in recent decades, particularly in the field of psychopharmacology, have positively changed the prognosis for depression. However, even today, one-third of depressed patients do not respond, or only partially respond, to standard treatment strategies.
Developing New Therapeutic Approaches An ambitious international study, bringing together new experts, including some members of the Fondamental Foundation, has just been published in the journal *Molecular Psychiatry*. Its aim is to provide a clearer definition of treatment resistance in depression in order to develop new therapeutic approaches and thus improve treatments for patients who do not respond, or only partially respond, to standard treatments.
