Ichthyosis is a genetic disease which has a significant impact on the quality of life, through chronic symptoms which disrupt daily activities and social life, such as scratching, the very visible and very unsightly appearance of the lesions and loss of scales.
Episodes of superinfections
The presence of cracks in the skin can be responsible for pain which sometimes prevents walking or everyday activities. There is an intolerance to heat with occasional discomfort. The skin can present episodes of superinfections which can increase the sensation of scratching, cause pain and sometimes smelly discharge.
A deterioration of self-image
Due to the visible nature of the lesions, patients are confronted with negative psychosocial reactions from those around them. This disease can impact productivity at work, sex life and cause depressive phenomena linked to a degradation of self-image.
Assistance to people affected
The Ichthyosis France Association (AIF) has set itself the mission of bringing together, supporting and informing people affected by ichthyosis. It also helps families to cope better with the illness, to escape isolation and it promotes assistance between those affected and their families.
