Breakfast: Europe is revising recipes and labels

The European directive nicknamed the "breakfast directive" is now in effect in France. It strengthens transparency on several everyday products: honey, jams, fruit juices, and powdered milk.

Jams will have to contain more fruit (450g/kg, 500g for "extra" varieties).
Honey will have to specify each country of origin, in order of proportion, replacing the current generic formulas.

"100% pure juice" products will be able to highlight the absence of added sugars, and reduced-sugar juices will have a dedicated label.

A new "lactose-free" category is being introduced for powdered milk.

The new labels will be rolled out gradually. This reform comes after a European investigation revealed that nearly half of imported honeys contained added sugars, even though these products represent 40% of annual consumption.
