The Ebola epidemic continues its alarming spread in Central Africa, with nearly 500 confirmed cases, according to the latest figures released Saturday by the WHO. The Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak was declared three weeks ago, remains the epicenter with 452 cases and 82 deaths. Neighboring Uganda has recorded 19 cases, including two deaths.
In a single day, the total rose to 471 cases and 84 deaths, a sharp increase that fuels fears of a crisis comparable to the 2014-2016 epidemic, which claimed more than 11,000 lives in West Africa. According to experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such a scenario remains possible without strong public health measures.
To try to contain the spread, the WHO and the Africa CDC have launched a $518 million response plan focused on surveillance, testing, and infection prevention. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed the urgency of acting quickly, helping affected countries and preparing neighboring states to detect and contain any new cases.
