The Covid-19 vaccination campaign is resuming earlier than expected due to the rise in Covid-19 cases. The Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau, announced that it will begin on October 2 instead of October 17, as initially planned. This decision follows the recommendation of the Committee for Monitoring and Anticipation of Health Risks (Covars) to begin vaccine boosters as soon as possible due to the uncertainty regarding the evolution of the virus.
The virus surveillance system in France is now similar to that of the flu, making it difficult to accurately track its spread. People targeted by vaccination include those over 65, vulnerable individuals, pregnant women, nursing home residents and those in close contact with vulnerable people. The Pfizer vaccine, adapted to the currently dominant XBB.1.5 strain, will be used initially.
The minister said 2.5 million doses are currently available, with a total of 13.5 million doses expected by November. A message will be sent to healthcare professionals to inform them of this decision and allow them to plan their orders.
