The French national health insurance system is strengthening its controls. In 2025, it successfully identified and blocked €723 million in fraudulent claims, according to figures presented Wednesday to the National Assembly by Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. This amount represents a 15% increase compared to 2024. Of these fraudulent claims, €49 million concerned sick leave.
According to the minister, the recent implementation of a secure form for declaring sick leave helped reduce this fraud by 10% in the last quarter of 2025. However, she warned about the current trend in spending related to sick leave, which she considers "unsustainable."
This spending has been increasing by approximately €1 billion each year for the past five years, reaching nearly €20 billion today, or 16% of outpatient medical expenses. A new plan to curb this growth is expected to be presented in April.
