On the occasion of World Prematurity Day, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation is highlighting its major research project, ENSEMBLE, which aims for the early detection of cerebral palsy, the leading cause of motor disability in children.
55,000 newborns each year In France, approximately 7% of babies are born prematurely, representing 55,000 newborns each year. They usually weigh less than 2.5 kg, and some even weigh barely 500 grams.
Life effects related to immaturity Even though the majority of them grow up without significant long-term effects, premature babies are susceptible to long-term effects related to the immaturity of their central nervous system. The more severe the prematurity, the greater the risk of cerebral palsy.
Varying Severities Perinatal inflammation linked to prematurity causes brain damage that can lead to short- and long-term developmental disorders, with varying degrees of severity, including cerebral palsy, vision or hearing impairments, or intellectual disability.
Early Detection of Risk The Cerebral Palsy Foundation is currently funding the European research project ENSEMBLE, which aims to detect the risk of cerebral palsy as early as possible in at-risk children, including those born prematurely.
