Less than two months after the first case was reported, a second person has been infected with bird flu in the United States. This infection is linked to an epidemic of the H5N1 virus which spread in American cow herds. Health authorities announced this news on Wednesday.
The affected person works on a farm in the northern state of Michigan, where the H5N1 virus has infected cows. The first case was reported on April 1 in Texas, in the South. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this was likely the world's first case of avian flu infection via a cow.
Despite these cases, health authorities believe that the risk to the American population remains low. For both the infected person in Michigan and the one in Texas, symptoms were only observed in the eyes, the CDC said. In 2022, a first human case of avian flu was detected in the country, but it was an infection transmitted by poultry.
