In 2023 in France, reports of illegal cosmetic injections peaked, with 104 cases recorded. These unqualified practices, often promoted on social media, attract young people and minors with prices lower than those of professionals, but they can cause serious harm, ranging from necrosis to blindness. Faced with the inability to treat all victims, reconstructive surgeries, or even facial amputations, are sometimes necessary.
Despite a national alert issued by the SNCPRE (National Union of Professional Cosmetic and Pharmacy Owners) in 2022, the number of fake specialists has not decreased, but awareness has increased, leading to legal action. The emblematic case in France is that of two sisters convicted for performing more than 600 illegal injections.
To curb this scourge, experts are calling for a ban on the over-the-counter sale of hyaluronic acid, while France is proposing a European-wide decree to regulate this practice.
