The Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) has issued an alert on chlorhexidine, an antiseptic commonly used to disinfect wounds. She noted a “constant increase” in serious allergic reactions linked to its use: hives, facial swelling and breathing difficulties, even anaphylactic shock...
Chlorhexidine is found in many products, including some toothpastes and cosmetics, and is often used as a preservative. Possible allergic reactions include hives, facial swelling, difficulty breathing and even anaphylactic shock.
To reduce the risk of allergy, the ANSM recommends not using chlorhexidine as a disinfectant at home. Instead, she suggests cleaning superficial wounds with plain water and soap. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to offer alternatives to chlorhexidine to their patients.
