On the occasion of World Cerebral Palsy Day, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation recalled that it is the leading cause of motor disability in children.
Cognitive or sensory difficulties
Cerebral palsy results from the irreversible destruction of brain cells in a fetus or infant. These brain lesions on the developing brain cause a range of movement or posture disorders, often accompanied by cognitive or sensory difficulties.
It can affect anyone
Every day, 4 newborns are born with cerebral palsy, or 1 newborn every six hours in France. An accident linked to birth, cerebral palsy can happen to anyone: umbilical cord, infant stroke, placental infection…
A lifelong disability
The consequences range from a child with a limp to a child in a wheelchair, sometimes with associated disorders (visual, language disorders, etc.). It is a lifelong disability.
Priority research projects
Since its creation in 2005, the Cerebral Paralysis Foundation has invested nearly 7 million euros in 78 research projects, such as the ENSEMBLE project and the CAP' study, targeting the priority needs of children and adults with cerebral palsy.
