Every year, more than 100,000 people are affected by skin cancer. Its most aggressive form, melanoma, saw its incidence increase fivefold between 1990 and 2018 to reach 15,500 new cases per year.
The importance of protective gestures
This increase is a consequence of increasing exposure to UV rays. A real public health issue, the prevention of UV exposure in childhood and the associated protective measures make it possible to reduce the risk of developing the disease in adulthood.
Childhood sunburns
This protection is all the more important during childhood, a period when the skin is still immature and more vulnerable to the carcinogenic effects of UV rays. Because childhood sunburns cause adult skin cancer, it is essential for patients to be familiar with protective measures.
Shadow is the coolest place
Also, to raise awareness, the National Cancer Institute is broadcasting, during the three long weekends in May, the campaign “Shade is the coolest place in spring!” ". This message is addressed to the entire population, and more particularly to parents.
Adopt the right reflex
It aims to encourage the population not to expose themselves to the sun and to seek shade as much as possible during outdoor activities. It’s a reflex to adopt, whatever the place of leisure.
