The National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) has issued a warning concerning the potential health dangers of taking the drug Antarene Codeine, which combines two painkillers.
According to the ANSM, prolonged taking of this medication can cause kidney damage, a significant drop in potassium levels in the blood and impaired consciousness. Cases of renal, gastrointestinal and metabolic toxicity have been reported in countries where Antarene Codeine is available without a medical prescription.
In France, all treatments containing codeine require a medical prescription. The ANSM also emphasized that codeine, like morphine, is an opiate and can carry a risk of abuse and dependence. The agency warned that taking the drug for too long has led to death in some patients, so it is important to remain vigilant even if these drugs are prescribed for pain relief.
