Moisturizing creams, sun protection, anti-aging, self-tanners, shampoos: depending on their composition, these cosmetics can be the friends or enemies of our health.
Some ingredients used in cosmetics are already classified as harmful to our health, and manufacturers are seeking to replace them. Others are simply prohibited.
Aging of products and harmfulness
A recent study creates a surprise with an accelerated aging test which shows that a frequently used ingredient with no prior safety history, octocrylene, degrades over time into benzophenone; a substance which induces liver cancer and the appearance of lymphoma in animals.
However, this substance resulting from the degradation of octocrylene is then found in very high concentrations, the longer the products last. Furthermore, benzophenone is very easily absorbed by the skin... Thus an initially healthy cream can end up dangerous, by presenting a hormone-disrupting and carcinogenic compound in large proportions...
But good news, given that octocrylene is harmful to the marine environment, many manufacturers have already removed it from their products, or are looking to replace it, a step forward for the environment which will also be for our health.
