Hearing your child cry is sometimes confusing. Hunger, fatigue, pain: what do these tears mean?
To decode these communication signs, American researchers have developed an algorithm that identifies the different types of crying and their meaning.
Improve care and reduce stress
The principle is based on the fact that there are commonalities between the way all infants manifest hunger, fatigue, discomfort, the need for attention or a clean diaper.
To develop their system, the scientists relied on 48 different cries, recorded in hospital from 26 babies, and each cry was associated with a need identified by the nurses or by the babies' relatives. Other signs associated with crying have also been studied.
The objective: the AI ??learns which type of crying corresponds to which category of needs. If this algorithm still needs to be fed by hundreds of new cries to be more efficient and precise, it can prove useful in facilitating the care and support of very young children, by reducing the stress of caregivers and parents alike. parents.
