Despite decades of study, the causes of infant colic remain poorly understood. Among the multiple suspected factors, the immaturity of the digestive system causing disturbances in the intestinal microflora, or microbiota, has been highlighted.
Live micro-organisms
The intestinal microbiota, a collection of bacteria present in our digestive system, is established during the first two years of life. Disturbed, it can then contain fewer good bacteria and be poor in Lactobacilli, leading in particular to digestive disorders and colic. This is where certain probiotics, these living micro-organisms, find their place.
A proven strain
For infant colic which affects 20 to 25% of babies aged less than five months and is accompanied by agitation, recurrent and prolonged crying which is most difficult to calm, studies have proven the effectiveness in breastfed babies of 'a strain of probiotic derived from breast milk. Its name: Lactobacillus reuteri, which today “is the only strain recommended for the management of colic in infants” specifies Doctor Marc Bellaïche, gastro-pediatrician.
The importance of the correct diagnosis
Be careful, however, not to blame all of your baby's crying on colic. Before giving these probiotics, it is strongly recommended to consult your doctor or pediatrician, who alone can make the correct diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
