Bacterial meningitis: expanded vaccination from January 1, 2025

Starting January 1st, meningococcal vaccination will be expanded in France due to the increase in serious infections.

Meningococci, highly dangerous bacteria, cause meningitis and septicemia, primarily in children and adolescents. Diagnosed by lumbar puncture, these infections can be fatal or lead to serious complications if not treated promptly.

To better protect infants, vaccination will cover all strains (A, B, C, W, Y) and will become mandatory for them. A dose of the ACWY vaccine will be administered at 6 and 12 months, and the meningococcal B vaccine at 3, 5, and 12 months.

For adolescents, a booster vaccination against A, C, W, and Y will be recommended between the ages of 11 and 14, and for those aged 15-24 as a catch-up vaccination. For adults, it is recommended for certain illnesses, high-risk professions, and specific travel needs.

In case of risky contact, rapid antibiotic treatment and possibly vaccination are necessary.
