Michel Barnier, the new French Prime Minister, has just made several important announcements concerning the health sector. Here are the key points:
Medical deserts
To combat medical deserts, a commitment program will be put in place to encourage young doctors to settle in areas under-resourced with health professionals.
Nurses Act
A new law will allow nurses to practice more autonomously, including prescribing certain medications and performing medical procedures without direct supervision from a doctor.
Retired doctors
Retired doctors will be encouraged to return to service, particularly in rural areas, to compensate for the lack of practitioners. He also expressed his desire to rely “on new technologies, telemedicine, remote monitoring, the use of artificial intelligence when useful”.
These measures aim to improve access to care for all French people, particularly in the regions most affected by the shortage of health professionals.
