UFC-Que Choisir warns the French about SPF 50/50+ sun creams, after noting that a third of the 13 products tested do not provide the indicated protection. The association asks the authorities to sanction the brands concerned and to intensify controls.
Tests reveal that 5 of the 13 creams fail to meet expected sun protection levels, with four providing protection equivalent to SPF 30. The brands in question include Vichy, Biotherm, Lancaster, Isdin and Rituals.
UFC-Que Choisir also calls for regulating environmental claims for cosmetics. Although most of the products tested are free of compounds undesirable for human health, 10 out of 13 have a poor environmental rating due to the presence of components harmful to aquatic organisms.
Finally, the association highlights the high prices of facial sunscreens, which are often two to seven times more expensive than body products, even for brands like Nivea and Yves Rocher.
