95% of toys sold on the Chinese platform Temu present a real danger for the safety of children, according to a study carried out by the European Toy Industries Federation.
Of the 19 toys tested, none of them met European Union regulations, meaning they should not be put on sale in the EU. These toys can cause cuts, airway blockages, choking, strangulation and chemical hazards. For example, a “rainbow ribbon rattle” intended for babies has sharp edges on the metal bells, small parts that can cause choking, and rigid protrusions that can cause airway blockages.
The Temu platform, which plays the card of very low prices and massive advertising investments, has assured that it has taken measures to make these toys unavailable on their platform. However, the European Toy Industries Federation stresses that corrective actions are not enough. It is essential that the European Union cracks down on unscrupulous operators based outside the EU who sell dangerous toys.
This study also recalls that similar studies carried out in 2020 on toys sold on the Amazon, eBay, AliExpress and Wish platforms also revealed worrying results: 97% of toys purchased did not comply with European legislation and 76% were deemed dangerous for children.
