The UFC-Que Choisir contacted the Council of State to denounce the inaction of the French government in the face of worsening medical demographics and inequalities in access to care. The association criticizes the refusal of the authorities to regulate the installation of doctors and launched a petition entitled “I accuse the State”.
UFC-Que Choisir has updated its interactive map of inequalities in access to doctors, noting an increase in medical desertification due to increased needs and a wave of retirements.
The study reveals that 19.3% of French people reside in a medical desert for ophthalmology, 24.8% of women for gynecology and 28.9% of children for pediatrics. If we exclude practitioners who charge overcharges, these figures rise alarmingly.
General practitioners are better distributed, with 2.6% of patients in medical desert. However, 44.4% of the population saw accessibility to general practitioners deteriorate between 2021 and 2023.
Finally, a survey revealed that 51.5% of general practitioners contacted refused to take new patients, and 28% of ophthalmologists contacted refused to schedule an appointment, offering very long delays.
