The bronchiolitis epidemic, which mainly affects babies, is spreading rapidly in France. During the week ending November 5, bronchiolitis activity increased markedly. Four additional regions are now in the epidemic phase, bringing the total number of metropolitan regions in this situation to ten.
Bronchiolitis, primarily caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), can lead to difficulty breathing in babies and, in some cases, emergency room visits and hospitalizations. The current epidemic is smaller than the same period in 2022, but several indicators increased last week to reach the already high level of 2021. A new preventive treatment, Sanofi's Beyfortus, could have an impact, but it is currently reserved for maternity wards while awaiting new stocks.
