Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is one of the 7,000 rare diseases known to date.
Redness of the eyes associated with itching
It is a severe chronic inflammatory allergic disease of the surface of the eye with serious consequences for the child. It manifests itself as redness of the eyes, associated with itching, tingling, mucous discharge and photophobia.
A history of atopic diseases
It mainly affects male children during their first decade (mostly ages 5 to 10) and resolves spontaneously after puberty. It rarely lasts more than 10 years. Patients with KCV frequently have a personal or family history of atopic diseases, such as asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis.
Examination by an ophthalmologist
Confirmation of the diagnosis is based on examination by an ophthalmologist. It is the repetition of symptoms throughout the year that allows this diagnosis to be confirmed.
Different solutions exist
If diagnosed and managed, KCV can be controlled through different solutions such as environmental preventive measures, drug treatment with eye drops, oral anti-allergic treatment or surgical treatment.
