In France, 4 out of 10 people experience an episode of viral herpes at least once in their lives, and 15% suffer from recurrent cold sores.
Giving Patients a Voice A national survey conducted by the pharmaceutical company Vectans Pharma has given patients a voice and encouraged them to break the isolation they may be tempted to retreat into when faced with recurring cold sore outbreaks and their consequences.
Clearly Identifying the Causes Patients and doctors identify fatigue and stress as the main factors likely to trigger a new outbreak. These are followed by sun exposure and infections (fever, colds, etc.). Finally, patients and doctors mention menstruation and dental work.
Warning Symptoms Tingling is the most frequently reported warning symptom by both patients and doctors. Swelling, burning sensations, and redness are mentioned less frequently. Doctors report pain more often than patients.
How to Treat an Outbreak Patients primarily use creams to treat their herpes outbreaks. They expect their treatment to shorten the healing time and reduce the duration of the outbreak. However, more than half of general practitioners consider systemic treatment more appropriate.
