Antibiotic consumption decreased in 2023, marking a decline after two years of increase, according to a study by Santé Publique France. Prescriptions in community medicine, representing more than 90% of total consumption, have stabilized (-0.2% compared to 2022) and their use fell by 3.3% compared to the previous year. br>
This decline, attributed to a lower incidence of winter infections, is an “encouraging sign”. However, the objectives of the 2022-2025 National Strategy have not yet been achieved (820.6 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants in 2023, compared to a target of less than 650).
Disparities exist: 59.1% of prescriptions and 56% of consumption concern women. Prescriptions for children under 5 have decreased, while consumption among those over 65 has increased. Regional disparities are noted, particularly in Corsica and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
Santé Publique France highlights a drop in prescriptions among general practitioners (-1.3%) but an increase among dentists and specialists (+1.4% and +4.6% respectively). The authority recalls that these drugs are only effective against bacterial infections and require a prescription and strict compliance with the treatment.
