Faced with financial drift, France is seeking to make savings. Thus, medical consultations will be less reimbursed from May 15, with the patient's contribution doubled from 1 to 2 euros. This increases the out-of-pocket burden for patients, although the French have one of the lowest in Europe at 8.7%.
This measure will allow Social Security to save more than 400 million euros. After the increase in the deductible on medicines, this measure aims to control the increase in health spending, forecast at 3.2% in 2024.
However, the government will not touch the care of long-term illnesses (ALD), which are an essential pillar of solidarity. ALD, reimbursed 100% by Social Security, concerns 13 million people in France.
