UNICEF launched a measles vaccination campaign in December, aiming to vaccinate more than 17 million children. The organization is concerned by the 3,266% increase in cases recorded in Europe and Central Asia in 2023, with 31,000 cases reported. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Romania are the most affected.
Measles, a highly contagious disease, caused more than 6,000 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2020. In 2019, nearly 90% of cases were in unvaccinated or poorly vaccinated individuals. In France, vaccination is compulsory for anyone born after 1980 and aged at least twelve months. According to Regina De Dominicis, regional director of Unicef, the increase in the number of measles cases is a clear sign of deterioration in vaccination coverage. In 2022, France recorded only 15 cases, giving hope for possible eradication of the disease.
