Dengue fever, a virus transmitted by tiger mosquito bites, could become the next epidemic in France. According to Public Health France (SpF), indigenous cases of dengue, that is to say locally contracted, reach 80 for the 2024 season, a record after the 66 cases in 2022. In 2023, there were around 50 indigenous cases .
The most affected region is Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur with 58 cases. Certain areas such as Vendargues, La Crau, Fréjus and Vallauris are still monitored. When a case is identified, active investigation is conducted to determine the extent of local transmission and adjust vector control measures.
The spread of dengue and other viruses such as chikungunya or zika is alarming and requires a coordinated response, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The number of serious cases of dengue tested has doubled each year since 2021.
